Webroot - the Bottom Line
Webroot - Full Review
Bottom Line:
When Webroot was developed, it soon garnered the reputation for providing a spotty approach to anti-virus operations. Numerous viruses were able to escape Webroot’s protective net.
The good news is that they’ve worked on blocking more programs that can infect your computer. However, some problems remain.
The boot time is slow and during scans, the performance of your computer can be severely hampered. How much depends on the model of your computer.
Despite Webroot upgrades, the programs do not catch all of the malicious software during tests. Another problem is the crowded interface, which is messy and, often, hard to understand.
Speed and Frequency of Updates:
Webroot rolls out updates slowly and infrequently. While updates against major threats appear to be sent out fairly efficiently; other threats are treated with less urgency, even though these virus and malware applications can cause serious harm to your computer.
AntiVirus Scanning and Protection:
The boot time is incredibly slow. Likewise, when the system is scanning for problem programs, the performance of your computer can be severly hampered. How much depends on the model of your computer. Despite Webroot recent upgrades, the programs do not catch all of the malicious software during tests.
Adware, Spyware, and Phishing Protection:
Just as Webroot was unable to catch all the virus threats, Webroot showed an inability to catch all adware and spyware threats beyond the most basic versions. Phishing scams were likewise missed entirely.
Registry Cleaner:
During one use of the registry cleaner, a fatal error was encountered. That’s not a good sign.
Memory Used:
Webroot uses a lot of precious computer memory. In fact, it’s gained a reputation of being a memory hog. Since Webroot uses so much memory, performance issues constantly arise and its effectiveness at stopping viruses is called into question.
Family Protection:
Webroot does include parental controls that offers improved family protection compared to most, but not all, comparable products.
Awards and Recognition:
None that we were able to verify.
Added Value or Noteworthy Features:
Webroot features are spread out through numerous versions. It’s hard to find a package that suits all of a user’s needs in a simple-to-understand product.
Reputable Company:
Webroot appears to the a fair and reputable company.
Costs and Special Offers:
I think Webroot’s packages are priced at about what one would expect considering the performance issues.
