Review Summary

We found ZoneAlarm to be an effective protective system that is very affordable, and pulls to the top among its price class. In real time, it defends against bad incoming content such as maliciously coded email, instant messages and websites.

Ease of Use:

ZoneAlarm is acknowledged as one of the most robust and effective Internet Security Suites. The everyday user will create an effective shield just by installing ZoneAlarm and leaving it to do its job on default settings. Independent tests as well as our own have shown that it does exactly what it is supposed to do with little user effort. However, there are plenty of bells and whistles for the advanced user which can be confusing at times.

Updates:

The default time schedule for updates is every hour. However, you can opt to have the scans occur at less frequent intervals or utilize the option of manually updating items.

Features:

Previously, ZoneAlarm used an older version of CA's antivirus engine. The 2009 version of ZoneAlarm includes the Kaspersky antivirus scanning engine, propelling ZoneAlarm into the forefront of security suite technologies. ZoneAlarm runs a handy feature that constantly scans for malware or unrecognized code. By so doing, this software has the distinctive potential to detect infant viruses that are not yet widely recognized or reported.

For years, ZoneAlarm Firewall has been the standard for personal firewall products. However, the upgraded firewall for 2009 is even better, catching everything testers could through at it.

Effectiveness:

ZoneAlarm is a very reliable defense system on the whole and effectually does the job it claims to do. The primary downside to the program is hindered computer speed during scans, however, the redesign allowing scan skips for programs that have not been used since the last scan addresses this issue.

Ease of Installation:

This product is relatively easy to install, requiring roughly a half hour of prompted instructions and a reboot to complete the entire process.
